FreeShow has made some major updates to Stage View, and whether you're new to the software or upgrading to version 1.4 or higher, this guide will walk you through how to set up and master Stage View the right way.
What is Stage View and Why It Matters
Stage View is more than just an output — it's your confidence monitor. It's designed to help speakers, worship leaders, or performers see key information like:
Current slide text
Next slide text
Countdown timers
Clocks
Custom messages (like reminders)
Before you set it up, always talk to the people who will be on stage. Their needs determine the best layout for your Stage View.
How to Start Your Stage Layout
Go to the top menu and click Stage.
Click New Layout and name your layout.
Think of this like setting up a "style" — it defines what the monitor will show.
First Key Item: Add a Slide Text item to show the current slide.
Turn on "Show Labels" in the “Options” tab to make your items easy to identify.
Second Key Item: Add another Slide Text item for the next slide.
Use Slide Offset under the textbox tab to show any slide i.e. next slide would be offset of 1, second from the current slide would be an offset of 2..
3. Important Settings and Pro Tips
Avoid Current Output: It can put extra load on your computer. Stick with "Slide Text" unless you truly need full visuals.
Dynamic Text Boxes: Add notes or reminders using dynamic variables, like "FreeShow Friday Topic" or custom messages that the folks on stage need to know.
Media: You can add media as a background but it's not recommended to avoid distractions for the stage users.
Progress Bars: Show how far through the lyrics or presentation you are.
Timers and Clocks: Essential for keeping worship sets and sermons on track.
4. Building Two Custom Stage Views
-
Worship Stage Layout:
Current Slide Text
Next Slide Text
Slide Progress (as Groups, showing Verse, Chorus, etc.)
Countdown Timer (ex: 45 min for worship)
Clock (Time of Day)
Custom Text Box for Quick Messages
-
Speaker Stage Layout:
Current Slide Text
Next Slide Text
Slide Progress (as Slide Numbers)
Countdown Timer (ex: 30 min sermon)
Custom Text Box for Urgent Notes (ex: "Wrap it up")
5. Outputs and Smart Features
Press Actions: Under the “Special” menu on your “Textbox” tab allows clickable interactions (like tapping a text box on a tablet to move to the next slide).
Output Settings: Create a dedicated "Stage Output" in FreeShow's Output settings.
NDI and Connections: Send your Stage View over the network to a tablet, computer, or second monitor.
6. Weekly Templates to Save Time
Create a FreeShow Project Template that includes:
Pre-set Worship Timer and Stage Layout
Pre-set Speaker Timer and Stage Layout
Worship and Sermon Introduction Slides
Each week, duplicate the project template, update your songs and sermon slides, and you're ready to go — with Stage View automated!
Final Thoughts
Mastering Stage View makes your entire service or event run smoother. It keeps the team confident, reduces stress, and lets everyone focus on the message, not the tech.
